In “Sophie’s Choice”, William Styron told the very same story, how Sophie’s father and husband were university professors and were shot as part of the Nazi invasion of Poland rapidly followed by deliberate crushing of the people through starvation, imprisonment, and savagery throughout. Many people are unaware of the War against the Church with tens of thousands of religious put in camps to destroy the souls and intellects of the Polish people. A common claim of the Nazis was that Slavic peoples only needed enough reading skills to read “Berlin is the capital of the Reich.”

And before they came for the professors they came for Magnus Hirschfeld, burned his library and went after gay and trans people. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/new-research-reveals-how-the-nazis-targeted-transgender-people-180982931/

An excellent and poignant reminder of where we stand today and our continued failure to learn from history.

Educators should be worried right now. At all levels, not just college profs. All regimes go after educators and students. That is coming soon.

It's always the same.

while here in the States, Israeli desires lead to the suppression of academics who support Palestine against the occupying state. Israel aims to alter America's education even of children so that American children become sympathizers of that foreign government.

December 19, 2023, Knesset press release: https://ghostarchive.org/archive/47Rw1 Knesset propaganda committee discusses American speech against Israel, as well as what the Knesset or the Zionist project deem “antisemitic” [see this Israeli-authored documentary for indications of how hard the ADL works to define non-preferential treatment as “anti-semitic” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTAjc1OSrmY ] on American campuses as a “problem” that doesn’t mesh with Israel’s “security [military] doctrine”. The committee states that American sentiment as a “problem” begins while American students are in American K-12, and that the “problem should be looked at far beyond the campuses. We have seen incidents that take place at elementary school and high school ages. The students don't come to the universities as a blank slate, they already absorb it in the education system”.

For more on this, see my writeup here https://substack.com/@artsandletters/note/c-101058140?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=7imgx , which links to more Knesset records as well as other analysis. Note that according to the Knesset, "the goal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ propaganda work is to “secure an international diplomatic envelope for the State of Israel for the military operation”."

It's crucial to understand that for Israel, military operations aren't ancillary or separate from society, the way they are for America or any European or indeed almost any other country. Israel is a militarized garrison state and its existence is intertwined with its military as much as Sparta's was. Chapters 3, then 1, of this 2016 Israeli analysis will flesh this out well. https://web.archive.org/web/20201030105332/https://ethz.ch/content/dam/ethz/special-interest/gess/cis/center-for-securities-studies/resources/docs/INSS%20memo159.pdf Note in particular, in Chapter 3, the post-1967 shift in Israel's military aims, becoming to effect territory expansion and to protect (in their terms) Jews wherever they are--here's a mild example of that in action https://www.972mag.com/settlers-take-over-east-jerusalem-home-in-the-dead-of-night/ .

It is certainly true that the US administration is pursuing unnervingly fascistic goals against American universities and the academics who comprise their intellectual existence. Do not stop looking for the root cause within the US. Without Israel's and Zionists' influence and pressure, it would not be happening. Full stop. In fact, without that influence and pressure, our political landscape would be very different indeed. https://carnegieendowment.org/posts/2007/10/moran-down-the-groups-who-cried-anti-semitism?lang=en and https://www.palestine-studies.org/sites/default/files/attachments/books/Kahanism%20and%20American%20Politics%20-%20The%20Democratic%20Party%27s%20Decades-Long%20Courtship%20of%20Racist%20Fanatics.pdf and https://theintercept.com/2024/02/01/george-latimer-aipac-donors-jamaal-bowman/ and, to return to the "contrived campus amtisemitism crisis", https://thegrayzone.com/2023/12/17/registered-israeli-foreign-agent-campus-antisemitism/ .

This diplomatic envelope includes, for Israel, the destruction of America's (and other countries') education systems and professoriat, as well as Palestinians' which now that we have seen, goes without saying.

At times, I find it necessary to remind people, don't fail to act on achievable goals because you're convinced there is a bigger, more "meta" cause of the problem. In this case, I have to say the reverse: don't be fooled into thinking that the current administration's actions are independent of Israel, and don't be lulled into thinking there is any better replacement possible, while Israel's influence dominates in America. That toxic influence must be rooted out. Israel is a fascist state and its approved politicians can only resemble Israel; their amenability to support of fascist Israel cannot help but translate into whatever else they do domestically or internationally. We cannot solve our political problems with Israel's sword hanging over our politicians' careers. There are plenty of politicians who have been sidelined by AIPAC. The US' political landscape is likely a lot healthier underneath the Israeli smothering blanket than we might think; we'll only be able to see that, and vote for whom we'd really choose, with AIPAC and similar organizations neutralized.
