Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, which spent $100 million per week during her condensed run for the presidency, is still flooding supporter’s inboxes with requests for cash.
That’s led to heightened scrutiny about how the campaign spent its record war chest and still ended up no match for President-elect Donald Trump’s MAGA.
Among the eye-popping expenses was a $1 million paid to Oprah Winfrey’s production firm, Harpo Productions, for a town hall event she hosted with Harris in September.
The full price tag for the event, meanwhile, was more than just the fee for Harpo: the New York Times, citing two people briefed on the details, reported Sunday that it amounted to to $2.5 million.
“I was not paid a dime,” Winfrey wrote in an Instagram comment. “For the live-streaming event in September, my production company Harpo was asked to bring in set design, lights, cameras, crew, producers and every other item necessary (including the benches and the chairs we sat on) to put on a live production. I did not take any personal fee. However, the people who worked on that production needed to be paid. And were. End of story.”

No, St. Oprah. You are worth $3 billion. You have no dependents. Why couldn’t you foot the whole bill as a personal or in-kind donation to the campaign against a racist, fascist, thug? How much do you need? At 70, how much can you possibly spend?
This is the thing about the ultra-wealthy that always galls me. They always want more. They always need more. And everybody else be damned…including, in this case, Oprah’s country.
A woman I know, who is well-off but not one of the ultra-rich and is truly generous, told me I’m looking at this wrong: “It’s not that they need the money. It’s that they are always looking over their shoulders and seeing someone with more than them. And they can’t stop until they can exceed them. And they don’t want to.”
Lovely.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE.
The ultra-rich became that way by not giving their money away without an in-kind ROI in order to
come out ahead. It's what they do, and the more they accrue the more they want...it's a pathology, comes with the territory.
How delightful to know that we simple folk live free of the contamination that comes from valuing wealth as the supreme good in life. How low Oprah makes herself look as she nickels and dimes her path away from a "failure" in her resume.
